21st Century "Gadget" etiquette
I was excited when GQ took the time to list 66 rules, tips and secrets for living like a gentleperson in the 21st century. Less excited when it wasn’t on their website. Fortunately, Mario Sundar posted their tips — an exclusive — here.

This is "Gadget Etiquette," he says.

#1. Don’t check your phone in a social setting. This shouldn’t be brain surgery. But the addiction runs deep. As if someone or something really important is going to email you with a message that is more important than what is happening in real time. I see people choosing to check their email during short networking breaks at meetings. Who-a. You’re there to network not disappear/hide behind your iPhone/Blackberry/whatever.

#2 and #3. If checking email is critical… click to continue

Shhhhh! Save $80 and pay only $49 to attend Wednesday's webinar: Boost Your Influence: Must Know Communication Strategies for Success Today!
What new skill did you learn last week to help you do better next week?

Top-performers continue to beat out all others even in today's marketplace. Why? They focus on what they can do, rather than what they can't. They constantly learn new ways to differentiate themselves and improve the results they get. Attend this teleseminar to learn how you can boost your communication skills and take your ability to influence and persuade to the next level. Spend one hour on the phone and you may truly change your life. (This teleseminar is not about email skills; it's about the interpersonal skills everyone needs to communicate in person, at meetings and over the phone.)

And here is the best part. Shhhh! As a bonus for subscribing to this EmailEzine, simply use this promo code, EZINE, and your investment is only $49 instead of $129! Don't miss out!

Register now. The teleseminar is this Wednesday, October 15 at 11:00a (PDT)/2:00p(EDT).

Practically guarantee your recipients read and act on your message

  1. Use a great subject line.
  2. Summarize your message in the first 3 lines or sooner. Set expectations like this: Hi Bill, I have 2 quick questions for you. First, ...
  3. Don't bury the action.
Don't do this: Hi Sophie, I’ve been considering scheduling that outside speaker you mentioned to me for this quarter's training. I think we should talk about it. because I have a few concerns. (Lost action)
Do this: Hi Sophie, I’ve been considering scheduling that outside speaker you mentioned to me for this quarter's training but I have some concerns about costs. Please call me today so we can talk about how we can work her into the budget. (Clear next step)

Stop sending emails that (in the morning!) you'll wish you hadn't
This is so great! The next time you decide to email after hours, you can check yourself to see if you're in the right state of mind to send the message. Okay... more specifically, picture this. You went out after work and were overserved. You get dropped off at home and not having anything else you're up to doing, you decide to check your emails. And there are three from your boss and one from your customer in Hong Kong. You're feeling really good, playful and clever, and decide to get the work done; why-wait-until-the-morning, you (mistakenly) think. But, aha, if you've set up the new Mail Goggles, before you can send that message, you have to answer a few math problems within a time limit. If you can't do the math, you get told: "Water and bed for you." If you get the math right, you get to send the email.

The default kicks in only on weekends or late at night. But you can change the default and some people should consider using it to cool down before they send any email. It's a breathalyzer for email. How cool is that?!

Here is what a recent
insurance client said:

You exceeded my expectations, and I really appreciated how you understood our industry and our pain, and validated who we were. This shows a significant amount of prep time on your part. Something I don't always see with National Speakers who give a "canned" talk. Anyway, you obviously touched a place with many of the attendees. Thank you for showing and sharing your wisdom, your joy, your heart.
