I hate bait and switch subject lines so right away you need to know:
I don’t know the guy in the photo <sigh>
I’m fully dressed (thank the lord)
You won’t be naked (unless you want to be and no need to tell me about it)

A naked email is an email written without the decency of dressing; personalization and care.

Here is a naked email example:

Good morning Sophie,

I am the Director of Sales for the ABC hotel and I wanted to take a moment to reach out and inquire if our hotel might be able to assist your company with future lodging needs. I consider myself privileged to be a part of this team, and our top goal is excellent customer service.

I would be happy to arrange a time for you to tour our property and discuss potential lodging needs. If you have any requests or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Warm Regards,

Naked as a jay bird!

The writer only wrote about her hotel and about herself exposing herself as a self-centered seller.

Not one word bothers to (ad)dress the reader’s needs. Not one word is caring enough to focus on Sophie’s lodging objectives (comfort, convenience, care for her travelers?).

The email is all about the writer. To be decent, the writer only needed to do two minutes worth of research to understand how she could align her product with what matters to the buyer. Or she could have used her knowledge base.

Instead, she sent a cold, naked message, and without an action step, wasted her time and her reader’s.

It’s time to get dressed!

BONUS
Beginning two out of two paragraphs with the word “I” will doom any email.

Instead of wasting space explaining how privileged you are (yes, you are lucky but what does that mean to me?), help her envision her happiness and her travelers’ comfort.

Research.

It enables personalization which is the price of admission in today’s virtual world of prospecting.
